SmartConnect

The Nera SmartConnect is an ultra-compact MultiService Provisioning Platform system. Its features make it a perfect choice for multiple applications in access and backhaul networks.

SmartConnect is a hybrid Ethernet and SDH based device for grooming and transporting packet data and voice (TDM) traffic in a Metro-Access-Network.

Together with Nera’s other unique Hybrid Ethernet and SDH solutions, SmartConnect allows a service provider to cut costs by deploying new and carrier class services using one platform. A policing mechanism in SmartConnect checks customer traffic in accordance with the Service Level Agreement (SLA) and performs the necessary handling.

Ethernet services can be configured either as Ethernet Line services in a point-to-point configuration similar to leased lines, or as a multipoint service used to interconnect several locations to create a Wide Area Network (WAN).

SmartConnect adapts the Metro Ethernet Forum standards that have become widely accepted by service providers, which means that Ethernet traffic can be classified into different bandwidth profiles such as:

  • Committed Information Rate (CIR)
  • Excess Information Rate (EIR)
  • Best Effort (BE)

As a hybrid solution SmartConnect not only simplifies service creation, it also provides legacy SDH solutions with new functionality by adding Ethernet, GFP, LCAS and VCAT features.

Flexibility

  • Multi-service device with a mix of E1, E3, T3, 10/100 Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet tributaries.
  • Aggregate speed of 155 to 622 Mbps in point-to-point or ring configurations.
  • Ethernet traffic is encapsulated and transported over SDH using Generic Framing Procedure (GFP)
  • Virtual Concatenation (VCAT) and Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS)
  • Ethernet Line-service (point-to-point) and Ethernet LAN-service (multipoint-to-multipoint) support.
  • Non-blocking with VC-12/3/4 granularity.
  • Ethernet bandwidth granularity for 10/100 BaseT Ethernet in 1Mbps steps (1 to 100), and 10 Mbps steps for GE.

Protection

  • MSP 1+1 protection for STM-1 and STM-4
  • SNCP protection in ring, dual parenting or meshed topology.
  • STP/RSTP

Size

  • 1RU box that provides high port density per footprint.
