Nera Networks awarded large WiMAX contract in Africa

Nera Networks was recently awarded a large WIMAX contract from an African fixed and mobile telecommunications operator. The contract, valued at USD 4.2 million, was won in competition with several large System Integrators, and represents the first of several possible network expansion phases

Nera Networks will, as a system integrator, deliver a complete turn key WiMAX solution to the operator.  This entails that we will design, plan, assemble, install and maintain the WiMAX network for the customer, says Odd Kåre Fossmo Nera’s  Executive Vice President for the African region.  With a WiMAX network, the operator can offer its business and private customers wireless access to communication services such as data, internet and Voice over IP.

WiMAX, a new global standard
WiMAX is a strategically important segment for Nera.  In addition to the newly awarded contract in Africa, Nera Networks has delivered and built several WiMAX and pre-WiMAX networks in for example Norway, Italy, Great Britain, Poland and Brazil.
WiMAX is a global standards-based technology enabling the delivery of last mile wireless broadband access.  WiMAX will provide fixed, nomadic, portable and, eventually, mobile wireless broadband connectivity without the need for direct line-of-sight with a base station. The build-out of WiMAX is proceeding at a fast pace as a result of the telecommunications industry having agreed on a common technical standard.
