The world's longest microwave radio hop to a moving rig/vessel

PointLink

Nera Networks AS has signed a contract with Talisman Energy Norway AS for the delivery of radio communication equipment to the Yme-field in the North Sea.

“This project with Talisman Energy confirms our position as a leading provider of microwave radio communication to the offshore business,” says Bjørn Hannisdal, sales manager of Nera Networks’ offshore and defense division.

The Yme field is located southwest of Egersund, Norway, and will be operational from the last part of 2009. Nera Networks will use the new third generation of its PointLink solution to transmit up to 200 Mb/s of traffic over a distance of 123 km between the Yme-field and an onshore site located south of Stavanger. This will be the world’s longest microwave radio hop to a rig/vessel.

“We have previously transmitted up to 50 Mb/s over a distance of 118 km with our previous PointLink generation,” Hannisdal explains. “But now we use our Evolution Series™ radios in the PointLink solution and can increase the capacity substantially.”
